Volcano Flashcards
Volcanic bombs
Volcanic bombs are lumps
of molten rock which
explode out of the
volcano.
As they fall to the ground
they become solid.
Thev are all different
sizes, and they cause huge
amounts of damage.
Main vent
The main vent
is the main
gap for the
magma to
escape. Lava
and volcanic
bombs usually
escape up the
main vent to
the surface.
Lahar
Rainwater and ash
mix together to form
a deadly mudflow.
Lahars then flow
through the land
near to the volcano
Lava
Magma from inside
the volcano
explodes out onto
the surface where
it becomes lava.
The darker the
lava, the cooler
the lava is!
Secondary vent
A secondary
vent is a
chimney which
comes out at
the side of a
volcano
It releases
steam and
volcanic gases
such as
sulphur.
Crater
The crater is a funnel-
shaped hole at the top of
the volcano.
For some extinct
volcanoes the crater fills
in with water and
becomes a lake!
Magma chamber
The magma chamber is a large underground pool of liquid
rock (magma). Within volcano
The molten rock is under great pressure, and given enough
time, that pressure can gradually fracture the rock around it
creating outlets for the magma to rise to the surface.
Pyroclastic flow
A pyroclastic
flow is a deadly
hot cloud of
ash and rock
that flows
down the side
of a volcano.
All these trees
were knocked
down by a
pyroclastic
flow!
Ash
Ash is small particles of dusty,
burnt material.
Don’t think that it is just lava
that does all the damage! This
whole village was destroyed
by ash from a volcano!
Ash clouds can be devastating
too, 20 countries closed their
airspace for a period over six
days and 100,000 travellers
were affected when the
Iceland volcano erupted in
2010
