Volcanism Products and Hazards Flashcards
Characteristics of pahoehoe lava flows?
Higher temperature, lower viscosity, m/hr flow rate
Characteristics of a’a lava flows?
Lower temperature, higher viscosity, m/day flow rate
4 types of fragments ejected during a volcanic eruption?
Tephra, lapilli, block, and bomb
What is tephra?
Volcanic ash: hard, abrasive, corrosive, cannot be removed by water
What is lapilli?
Fragments between 2 and 64mm, when lava cools
What is a block?
Pre-existing rocks shattered by an eruption
What is a bomb?
Lava cools as it travels through the air, becomes stream-lines
What is mass wasting?
Secondary effect - includes debris and mud flows, avalanches, and landslides
What is lahar?
Mudflow composed of pyroclastic material, water, mud, and debris
What are the 5 different methods to monitor volcanoes?
Tiltmeter, electronic distance measurements, remote and near imaging, gas monitoring, seismometers
