volcanic hazards Flashcards
what are lava flows?
Lava can flow quickly or slowly depending on the viscosity. silica makes larva viscous and slow, which is common in explosive eruptions.
what are lahars?
(mudflows)- these are caused by a number of reasons, usually by melting ice at high latitudes.
what are glacial floods (jokullhuaups)
when the temperatures are too high from magma, glaciers or ice sheets at high temperature quickly melt and large amounts of water is discharged.
what is tephra?
this is any type of rock ejected by a volcano.
what are toxic gases?
this his the released during some eruptions, even co2 can be toxic as it can replace oxygen as it is heavier.
what is acid rain?
this is caused when gases such as sulphur dioxide are released into the atmosphere.
what are nuees ardentes/ pyroclastic flow?
this is clouds of brining hot ash and gas that collapse down a volcano at high speeds. the average speeds are around 60mph but can reach speeds of 430mph
