Voice Disorders Flashcards
Difference between organic and functional voice disorders
Functional: Functional voice disorders are typically not associated with physical or structural abnormalities in the vocal mechanism. Instead, they result from how a person uses their voice and may involve behavioral or psychological factors.
These disorders are often related to voice misuse, abuse, or excessive vocal strain. They can also be triggered or exacerbated by stress, anxiety, or emotional factors.
Organic: Organic voice disorders are typically associated with physical changes or abnormalities in the vocal tract, vocal folds, or related structures.
Examples of common functional voice disorders
muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), vocal hyperfunction, and psychogenic voice disorders
Examples of organic voice disorder causes
vocal cord nodules or polyps, laryngeal cancer, vocal cord paralysis, and structural abnormalities in the larynx.
