Vocb. Flashcards
Base
a chemical species that donates electrons, or hydroxide ions or thy accepts protons; turns litmus paper blue and has a bitter taste; neutralizes acids
Acid
a chemical substance that neutralizes alkalis, dissolves some metals, and turns litmus paper red; typically a corrosive, or sour tasting liquid of this kind
Solute
the part in a solution that is being dissolved
Solvent
the part in the solution that is the dissolver (usually makes up most of the solution)
Dilute
A solution with a low concentration (adding water to something can dilute it)
Surfactant
a chemical added to water to reduce the surface tension (liquid soap is a surfactant)
Polar
A molecule with certain charges at each end (+and-) is a polar bond
Solution
A homogeneous mixture that contains a solvent and at least one solute
Concentrated
how much solute is dissolved in a solvent (low or high concentration)
Surface Tension
a force acting on the surface of a liquid, tending to minimize the are of the surface and causing it to act like a thin membrane
Indicator
anything that changes color, or reacts to an acid or a base; they help identify the pH level and wether it is an acid or a base
Saturated
adding to much solute to a solution, so that no more can possibly dissolve
Supersaturated
if you manage to dissolve a little more solute into a saturated solution, it is supersaturated
