How can you find the minor of any major?
Four semitone down from the note. Include tonic.
What is the glottis?
The space between the vocal folds
What do the Cricothyroid muscles do?
- They are the stretchers
- Tilt front end of thyroid cartilage away from cricoid cartilage
- ## Stretches and lengthens vocal folds creating higher pitch
What do the Thyroarytenoids do?
- They are the false vocal folds
- Protect the true vocal folds
- They are the tensors
- Assist in closing off the larynx
- Thicken the vocal folds
Chromatic Scale
12 semitones
What produces twang?
Aryepiglottic Sphincter
The gathering of the edges of the aryepiglottic sphincter creates a narrower tube, this makes twang.
Soft palate lifts creating space
What is the purpose of retraction?
Primary Function = To retract the false vocal folds
Secondary Function = To raise the soft palette and open the pharynx
What is the benefit of increased retraction?
- More resonance
- Clearer tone
What are the indicators of tongue tension?
- ‘Froggy’ sound, caused by the tongue trying to keep the larynx low.
- Divot in the tongue, caused by the tongue pulling back.
What does SOVT stand for?
Semi-occluded Vocal Tract
What is the purpose of SOVT exercises?
- Back pressure helps align the folds in a more balanced position.
- Regulate subglottal pressure, creating the right amount of space and pressure in the vocal tract to create less impact on the folds.
What causes a nasal sound?
Narrowing of gap between back of tongue and soft palate, deadens sound.
What are the benefits of clear tone?
- Alleviate tongue tension and tension in general
- Better diction
- Regulate subglottal pressure
What produces pitch?
Vibration of the true vocal folds.
How to identify Major Key?
Last sharp + one semitone.
How to identify Minor Key?
Note of 2nd last flat.
What is the function of the arytenoid cartilage?
Open and close the vocal folds.
What is the name of the joint that connects the mandible to temporal bone (temple)?
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
What is the difference between Tilt and Laryngeal sit?
- Tilt is the mechanism of moving the larynx.
- Laryngeal sit is the position the larynx sits, while singing, to produce a particular sound colour.
How do you produce a louder sound?
- Increase breath speed
- More retraction
- Focusing sound
- Support
- Opening up resonators
Laryngeal Sit Exercise
- Counting 1-10
- Cartoon to New speaker
What are the three point of the Sound Production Triangle?
Placement, Retraction and Laryngeal sit.
