French song for voice and accompaniment prominent from approx 1580 through the 17th century.

English or French song for solo voice with instrumental accompaniment, setting rhymed poetry, often strophic and usually in a dance meter
strophic variation
17th century vocal setting of a strophic poem in which the melody of the first stanza is varied but the harmonic plan remains the same. The harmonic duration may vary to accentuate the meaning of the text. Monteverdi used this method of writing in Orfeo’s aria Possente spirto.
stile concitato
Rapid repetition on a single note as spoken syllables or string tremolo used to convey anger or warlike actions. Monteverdi developed this technique in Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda.
concerted madrigal
17th century practice of adding instrumental accompaniment to the madrigal. Monteverdi used basso continuo beginning at the end of his 5th book of madrigals.
song cycle
A group of songs performed in succession that tells or suggests a story. Schubert sought to describe the scene or characters as in the song cycle Winterreise.
English Musical Renaissance
A movement in the 1880s to create an independent British musical tradition. Term was coined by critics Bennett and Maitland
Folk-Song Society
A group established by Parry and Sanford devoted to teh collection and publication of fold songs of the British Isles
ballad - 18th century
An expansion of German lied modeled after the English and Scottish folk ballads. Piano accompaniment more of a partner in telling the story.
modified strophic form
In lieder, modified strophic form is used to create contrast. Some strophes repeat music while other strophes introduce new music. Schubert - Der Lindenbaum - Winterrese
