vocabulary words Flashcards
Comparison by division of two quantities
A proportional comparison in which one quantity can be described as a ratio of the other (ratio.)
Multiplicative comparison of two quantities
A proportional comparison in which one quantity can be described as a multiple of the other (proportion.)
part-to-part comparison
The comparison of one part to another part (e.g., boys to girls.)
per
For each or for every
percent
The ratio of a number to 100; per hundred
Positive rational number
The set of numbers that can be expressed as a fraction a/b, where a and b are counting (natural) numbers.
Proportion
A mathematical sentence stating that two ratios are equal; for example, 2/6 = 6/18.
Qualitative
A board subjective description (e.g., The speed of car A is slower that the speed of car B.)
Quantitative
A narrowed objective description associated with a quantity (numbers) (e.g., The ratio of blue cars to red cars is 6:3; therefore, there are twice as many blue cars as red cars.)
rate
A ratio in which two quantities with different units of measure are compared ( a multiplicative comparison of two different quantities where the measuring unit is different for each quantity; e.g., miles/gallon; feet/minute.)
ratio
A comparison of two quantities ( a multiplicative comparison of two quantities.)
scale factor
The common multiplicative ratio between pairs of related data which may be represented as a unit rate.
strip diagram
A model or drawing that looks like a strip of tape; a strip diagram is used to represent number relationships ( a linear model used to illustrate number relationships.)
unit rate
A comparison of two measures with one term having a value of 1; may also be called unit price or unit cost ( a ratio between two different units where one of the terms is 1.)
part-to-whole-comparison
The comparison of one part to the whole (total) (e.g., girls to all the students.)
