Vocabulary to Know Flashcards
Solvent
The liquid in which a substance is dissolved
Solute
The substance that is dissolved in a liquid to create a solution
Solution
A mixture in which the solute is evenly distributed in a liquid
Mass
The amount of matter within a substance
Matter
Any substance that takes up space and has mass
Subscript
A small number on the bottom right of a letter showing the number of atoms in a substance
Atom
The basic particle of a chemical element
Molecule
Two or more atoms bonded together
Element
A substance made of only one type of atom
States of Matter
A distinct form in which matter can exist (three basic states are: liquid, solid, and gas.)
Physical Change
A change from one state to another (liquid, solid, gas) without a change in chemical composition
Chemical Change
Any change that causes a new substance to be formed
Chemical Reaction
when reactants contact each other, bonds between atoms are broken, and the atoms form new bonds to make new products
Water Cycle
The continuous movement of water from the earth to the atmosphere and then back again
Rock Cycle
A continuous process where the three forms of rocks transform from one to the other
Stoichiometry
Measuring the elements in chemical equations (comparing reactants and products )
Reactant
A substance in a chemical reaction
Product
The new substance created in a chemical reaction
SI Units
Units used in The International System of Measurement (like grahams, kilograms, millimeters, meters, etc.)
Margin of Error
The amount by which a set of data might not be accurate (used in collecting experiment results.)
Law of Conservation of Mass
Mass can be neither created nor destroyed, but may undergo chemical change. (The mass of the reactants must equal the mass of the product.)
