Q

X intercept

A

The X coordinate of the point at which a line crosses the X axis.

17
Q

Absolute value

A

A value that does not change.

18
Q

Equation

A

And equation is a mathematical statement that contains an =, like 8X plus B equals C.

19
Q

Exponent

A

An exponent is a power that a number is raised to.

20
Q

Algebraic Expression

A

An algebraic expression contains at least one variable.

21
Q

Formula

A

A formula shows a mathematical relationship between expressions.

22
Q

Inequality

A

An inequality is a mathematical expression that contains an inequality symbol. The inequality symbols are: less than , less than or equal to, greater than or equal to, and not equal to.

23
Q

Integer

A

The integers are the numbers. For example -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3

24
Q

Operation

A

An operation is a rule for taking one or two numbers as inputs and producing a number as an outfit. Some arithmetic operations are multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

25
Q

Term

A

In an expression or equation, terms are numbers, variables, or numbers with variables. For example, the expression 3X has one term, the expression 4x squared +7 has two terms.

26
Q

Variable

A

A symbol used to represent a quality that can change. For example, in the expression 2X + Y, X and Y represent variables.

27
Q

y = mx + b

A

This is the equation for almost any line.

m=slope
b= y-intercept

For example, a line with a slope of 50 and a y-intercept of 32 would have the equation y=50 X +32.

28
Q

Slope

A

The slope is a number that shows how deeply a

line slants we often use the letter m to stand for a line’s slope.

29
Q

Distributive property

A

A property of real numbers that states that the product of a number and the sun or difference of two numbers is the same as the sun or difference of their products.
Example:
2(14+4)=2x14+2x4

30
Q

Perfect square

A

A perfect square is the product of a rational number multiplied by itself.

31
Q

Simplify

A

To put an equation in its simplest form.

32
Q

Whole numbers

A

Whole numbers are your basic counting numbers. For example 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…

33
Q

Discrete data

A

Data that can only take certain values. For example, the number of students in a class - you can’t have half a student.

34
Q

Non-linear function

A

Equations his graphs are not straight lines are called non-linear functions.

35
Q

Domain

A

The domain is the set of all first elements of ordered pairs or the X coordinates. (X,Y)

For example, in the ordered pair (2,5) 2 would be the domain.

36
Q

Range

A

The range is the set of all second elements of ordered pairs or the Y coordinates. (X,Y)

For example, in the ordered pair (8,5) 5 would be the range.

37
Q

Evaluate

A

To evaluate and algebraic expression, you have to substitute a number for each variable and perform the arithmetic operations. In the example: X + X = 12 the variable X is equal to 6. 6+6 = 12.

38
Q

Slope

A

The measure of the steepness of a line.

39
Q

Numerical expression

A

A numerical expression is a mathematical phrase that contains operations and numbers.
