Vocabulary of Physical and Chemical Changes Flashcards
A change that alters the form of an object without changing what type of matter it is. Examples: molding clay, sharpening a pencil.
Physical Change
Occurs when atoms link together in new ways to create substances different from the original substances. (also known as a chemical reaction) examples: decaying, and burning
Chemical change
A change of the state of matter (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) a PHYSICAL change
Phase Change
The way a substance reacts with other substances
Chemical Property
The temperature at which a substance boils (212°F or 100°C)
Boiling Point
The temperature at which a substance freezes (32°F or 0°C)
Freezing Point
An original substance at the beginning of a chemical reaction.
Reactants
A substance at the end of a chemical reaction
Products
A solid substance that forms and separates from a solution and shows evidence of a chemical change
Precipitate
States that the mass of an object, or collection of objects never changes, no matter how the parts are rearranged.
Law of Conservation of Mass
The deterioration of materials or metals, as it reacts with its environment
Corrosion
A thin layer of corrosion that forms over copper, brass, and silver
Tarnish
