Comprehension Monitoring
Being aware of when meaning is being attained or lost while reading.
Inferring
A comprehension strategy where a reader draws a conclusion based on text evidence and background knowledge.
Metacognition
The process of “thinking about thinking”.
Retelling
A detailed oral or written recounting of what has been read.
Schema
The sum total of our background knowledge and experience.
Story Structure/Story Elements
The way the content and events of a story are
organized into a plot.
Summarizing
A process in which a reader synthesizes the important ideas in a text.
Synthesizing
Summary with the inclusion of a reader’s schema, beliefs, emotions, and values that are important to the overall meaning.
Text Features
The items on a page that guide a reader through the information.
Automaticity
A general term that refers to any skilled and complex behavior that can be performed rather easily with little attention, effort, or conscious awareness.
Fluency
The ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with proper expression and comprehension.
Grouping
Phrasing thought units while reading instead of focusing on word-by- word reading (processing text in 3-4 word phrasal units).
Guided Repeated Oral Reading
An instructional strategy where a student rereads a passage 2-7 times out loud with feedback and modeling.
Lexical Access
Reaching one’s internal dictionary in memory.
Phrase Cued Text
Reading passages that are marked in meaningful phrase boundaries with slash marks (single or double).
