Extension
Increases angle between two bones or surfaces
Flexion
Decreases angle between two bones or surfaces
Dorsiflexion
Flexing or raising the dorsal surface of the foot
Plantar flexion
Flexing the plantar surface of the foot, depressing the foot and point the toes
Abduction
Movement away from the midline
Adduction
Return to the midline, movement to midline
Circumduction
Moving a bone around its axis (spinning), movement of a joint in a single rotary axis
Lateral rotation
Spinning a bone around its axis outward, away from the body; also called external rotation
Medial rotation
Spinning a bone around its axis inward toward the body; also called internal rotation
Elevation
To raise or move sueriorly
Depression
To lower or move inferiorly
Pronation
movement involving forearm, radius rotates medically around ulna, ends with dorsal side of hand facing forward
Supination
Reverse pronation, rotate radius laterally, ends with palm facing forward
Inversion
Turn foot in, rotate sole medially
Eversion
Turn foot out, rotate sole laterally
Protraction
Move forward, ex: jut out jaw
Retraction
Move backward from protracted position
