A serious crime (such as murder or rape).
felony
An intentional act by one person that creates a fear in another of an imminent harmful or offensive contact, even though contact is not required.
assault
An unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. Although actual injury is not a requirement this type of criminal offence usually is accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means likely to produce death or great bodily harm.
aggravated assault
The unlawful touching the person of another by the aggressor himself, or any other substance put in motion by him. It must be either wilfully committed, or proceed from want of due care.
battery
Theft or fraudulent conversion of money entrusted to one’s care.
embezzlement
A voluntary act by one person inconsistent with the ownership rights of another. Examples are seen in cases where trees are cut down and the lumber hauled from the land by someone not having clear ownership; or removing furniture belonging to another from a cohabited dwelling, placing it in storage and not telling the owner of the whereabouts.
conversion
The crime of using dishonest methods to take something valuable from another person.
fraud
The illegal taking and carrying away of personal property belonging to another with the purpose of depriving the owner of its possession.
larceny
To proceed against a defendant by charging that person with a crime and bringing him or her to trial.
prosecute
Early release of a prisoner who is then subject to continued monitoring as well as compliance with certain terms and conditions for a specified period.
parole
The denial, refusal, or rejection of a right, power, or responsibility.
disclaimer
The specific manner of expressing in words in a speech or piece of writing
wording
A condition, requirement, or item specified in a legal instrument.
stipulation
Consistent conditions; conditions conforming to one standard.
uniform conditions
A defect in a legal document that can render it invalid.

A published statement or picture that unfairly damages a person’s good name or reputation.
libel
The making, drawing, or altering a document with the intent to defraud. A signature made without the person knowing of or consenting to it.

The legal process of transferring property from one owner to another.
conveyance
The net worth of a person at any point in time. It is the sum of a person’s assets - legal rights, interests and entitlements to property of any kind - less all liabilities at that time.

A method of gaining legal title to real property by the actual, open, hostile, and continuous
possession of it to the exclusion of its true owner for the period prescribed by state law.
squatter’s rights
A house or building, together with its land and outbuildings, occupied by a business or considered in an official context

The formal right of ownership of property.
