Aquatic Animals
Water Animals
Nekton (Nektonic Animals) - nek’ tun
Aquatic animals that can swim by propelling, gliding or paddling.
Benthos (Benthic Animals) - ben’ thahs
Aquatic animals that don’t swim but scurry, crawl, hop, scoot burrow, or slither across the bottom of a body of water.
Sessile - ses’ uhl
Benthic Animal that sticks to one place and just sits there, not moving around.
Plankton - plangk’ tun
Benthic animals that wander or drift
Phytoplankton - fye’ toh plangk’ tun
Plankton that use the sun to make their own food.
Zooplankton - zoh’ uh plangk’ tun
Plankton that need to eat in order to get food
Mammals
Warm blooded creatures that breathe air, has a backbone and hair
Reptiles
Cold blooded creatures that breathe air, has a backbone, scales and lays eggs
Amphibians
Cold blooded creatures that don’t have scales
Fishes
Cold blooded creature that doesn’t breathe air, has a backbone and scales

Currents that form on the surface of the ocean
Gyres - jires
Circular patterns in ocean surface currents
Thermohaline Currents - thur moh hay’ line
A deep ocean current caused by ocean water sinking and rising
High Tide
When the water line is high on the shore
Low Tide
When the water line is low on the shore
Spring Tides
When the high tides are higher than usual and the low tides are lower than usual
Neap Tides
When the high tides are lower than usual and the low tides are higher than usual

Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic
Seas
Seas are smaller than oceans but still made up of salt water
Freshwater
Water that is not salty
Brackish
What happens when freshwater mixes with saltwater

The place where a river meets an ocean or sea

The part of a continent that is under water
Continental Slope - kon’ tuh nent uhl
The end of the continental shelf where there is a drop off into the deep ocean below
Continental Rise - kon’ tuh nent uhl
One part near the very end of the drop off that has a more gentle slope
Abyssal Plain - uh bis’ uhl
The deep, dark ocean floor
Sunlit Zone
The underwater zone that is lit by the sun
Twilight Zone
The underwater zone that is fairly dark with only a little sun coming through
Midnight Zone
The underwater zone that is completely dark with no sun reaching it
Bioluminescence - by oh loo mi ness’ ens
The ability to create light

Heaviness of the water
