Independence
Freedom, especially from control by another country or government.
Patriots
People in the American colonies who wanted the colonies to break away from Great Britain. Such people favored independence for the colonies.
Loyalists
People in American colonies who wanted the colonies to remain under the control of the king and Great Britain. Loyalists were loyal to the king and opposed independence.
Neutralists
American colonists who did not support either side (loyalists or patriots) in the fight for independence from Great Britain.
Traitor
A person guilty acting against his or her own country.
Sons of liberty
The sons actively encouraged colonists to disobey British laws.
