What are the Rules of Law?
That Laws are necessary for society.
Law applies to everyone.
No one in society has the power to remove rights from people unless in accordance with the law.
What is the Adversarial System?
The System where 2 parties present evidence to a impartial judge or jury.
What is the Assize?
A type of traveling court introduced by King Henry II to make laws in UK consistent.
What is Case Law?
Case law is where a method of deciding cases based on recorded decisions of similar cases.
What are Circuit Judges?
Judges of Travelling Courts instituted in the early formations of British law.
What is the Code of Hammurabi?
The earliest set of known recorded laws, written by Hammurabi, King of Babylon. Mostly retribution, but some based on restitution as well.
What is the Code of Li K’vei?
A chinese set of laws, created in 350BCE dealing with robbery, theft, murder and punishment.
What is Codifiying?
The process of creating, sorting and arranging laws.
What is Common Law?
The law that is based off of Case law, applies to everyone, developed in English Courts.
What is Divine Right?
The fact that kings and monarchs had the right to rule through god’s will.
What were the Great Laws of Manu?
A set of Indian Laws created in 1000BCE, passed down from Oral Tradition.
What is Habeas Corpus?
The law that you have to be in front of a court in person in order to be sentenced.
What was Justinian’s Code?
Created in the Byzantine Empire, clarified from Roman law. Basis of modern civil law.
What was the Magna Carta?
The great charter of England that established political and civil rights. Established the Rule of Law and Habeas Corpus.
What was the Mosaic Law?
Biblical Law found in the book of Exodus.
