Q

Inductive (Argument)

INDUCTIVE* A property of the intentions arguer.

A

STRONG* a property of the argument itself.

An argument intended to be strong but not necessarily completely valid.

You may concede that the argument does not necessarily follow from the premises but you believe that there is a strong inference.

Example of failed but still inductive argument:

  1. Most Chinese people have dark hair.
  2. Julie has dark hair.
  3. Therefore, Julie is Chinese.

DEDUCTIVE* a property of the intentions of the arguer.

A

An argument intended to be VALID.
VALID*property of the argument itself.

Example of failed but still deductive argument:

  1. If the match is burning there must be oxygen in the room.
  2. The match is not burning.
  3. Therefore, there is no oxygen in the room.

They may believe that the conclusion follows with certainty from the premises. But in this case they’ve made a mistake.
