Affix
A letter or letters that change a root word’s meaning (prefixes or suffixes).
Synonym
Words with the same or a similar meaning
Gender Influence on Language
The fact that language can be gender specific (ex: he or she).
Etymology
The study of the origin and history of words.
Regional Influence on Language
In different places, words may be different or the same word may be pronounced differently (ex: soda or pop).
Analogies
Used to compare two things that are usually thought of as different but have something in common.
Semantic Mapping
A form of scaffolding which helps students to develop connections among words. Semantic maps have many formats. In one method, students write an example, a non-example, a synonym, and an antonym.
Connotation
The implied meaning of a word; the feeling a word conveys.
Cultural Influence on Language
Factors related to a student’s cultural background that leads to differences in language usage (ex: social class can be a factor).
Morphology
The study of forms of words, including affixes, roots, stems, and parts of speech.
AKA determining word meaning by structural analysis.
Root
Base word to which prefixes, suffixes, and syllables can be added.
Ethnic Influence on Language
A person’s race and family heritage impacts their language usage.
Technological Influence on Language
Words associated with technology come and go in the daily lexicon.
Derivational Affix
An affix that changes the root or base word into a new word. These show the relationship of the word to its roots word. (When the derivational affix, “ful” is added to the noun, beauty, the word “beautiful” forms, meaning full of beauty.)
Lexicon
The collective vocabulary of a person or language.
