Vocabulary Flashcards
Criterion referenced test
Test that indicates a student’s proficiency in some skill; performance is then compared to a standard of mastery.
Norm referenced test
Test that indicates a student’s relative standing amongst a group of students.
Formative assessment
Formal and informal assessments teachers use to ensure that students are learning the material.
Summative assessment
Formal assessment that is testing a student’s comprehension of the entire unit’s material.
Validity
How well a test measures what it is supposed to measure.
Reliability
Measurement of the test to be consistent.
Standard error of measurement
A statistic designed to estimate the extent to which an observed score deviates from a true score.
Differential instruction
Providing different ways of teaching which allows students who learn in different ways. to learn in a way that best benefits them.
Assimilation
The process by which a child relates new objectives and ideas to familiar objects and ideas.
Aptitude test
Future oriented, predicting what an individual is capable of doing with further training and education.
Psychometrics
Validity, reliability, norms and administration/scoring make up this. It should be good, sound and acceptable.
Standard deviation
The measure of variability for the average distance that scores deviate from their mean. It is calculated by taking the square root of the variance.
Variance
The variance measures the average square distance that scores deviate from their mean. The value of the variance can be 0 or greater than 0.
Universal screening
This provides information about all the students in a general education classroom to determine if any are at risk or below level of expected performance for their grade.
High-stakes testing
Assessments that states and districts use to determine whether or not students will advance from one grade to another, graduate from high school, or have access to specific fields of study.
RTI
Known as Response to Intervention, this is the application of learning or behavioral interventions and measurement of students’ responses to such interventions.
Curriculum-based measurement
A method of monitoring instruction regularly. The student’s CBM is based on the achievement goal for the school year.
RTI Tier 1
This is focused specifically on the core curriculum with instruction and interventions targeting all students. Statistics show that approximately 80% to 85% of students should meet grade level norms without additional assistance beyond this first tier.
RTI Tier 2
This typically involves small group instruction. Approximately 3% to 6% of students will still have difficulty after Tier 2.
RTI Tier 3
This typically is the most intense and involves one-on-one instruction in a regular educational environment. This is known as the INTENSIVE level in which 5% of students fall into this tier.
