Vocabulary Flashcards
Ataxia
General term that describes loss of movement coordination due to Cerebellar pathology
Decomposition of movement/dysynergia
Movement broke down into parts
Not fluid!
Dysmetria
Over or under shooting target
Nystagmus
Rhythmic oscillation of eyes, difficulty holding gaze on object in periphery
Titubation
Rhythmic oscillation of trunk or head
Truncal ataxia
Decreased muscle coordination of trunk
Dysdiadochokinesia
Loss of ability to do rapid alternating movements
Dysarthria
Disorder of motor component of speech
One-Word-at-a-time
Hypotonia
Decrease in muscle tone
Gait ataxia
Wide base, irregular steps, poor upright stance stability, high guard, unsteady, staggering, veering, swaying
Postural tremor
Limb against gravity —>up and down oscillation
Standing —> back and forth oscillation
Intention/kinetic tremor
Occurs during voluntary movement of limb
Tremor increases as limb nears intended goal or speed is increased
Hypometria
Underestimation
Hypermetria
Overestimation
Asthenia
Generalized muscle weakness associated with Cerebellar lesions
Asynergia
Loss of ability to associate muscles together for complex movements
Rebound phenomenon
Loss of “check reflex”, halt of forceful movements when resistance is eliminated
Resting tremor
At rest tremors, disappears with movement
Hand tremor =pill rolling
Head, neck, trunk, oral area
Hypokinesia
Decreased ROM
Plastic rigidity
Constant resistance to passive movements in any direction regardless of speed
Cogwheel rigidity
Combining lead-pipe rigidity with tremor
Rigidity causes a catch and tremor allows release
Festination
Shuffling gait with short steps and progressive increase in speed
Propulsion
Festination while walking forward
Retropulsion
Festination while walking backward
