Climactic Order
an order of increasing importance (best for last) ascending order
Denouement
end of a play where strands are drawn together. (climax)
End-Stopped Line
line of poetry that is paused using punctuation (period/semicolon)
Enjambment
the continuation of a line of poetry without any punctuation.
Figurative, figuratively
departing from literal use of words. Metaphorical. Words create art. (gold - the tears wept by the sun)
Hyperbole
exaggerated statements not meant to be taken literally.
Image, imagery
visually descriptive
Literal, literally
taking words in their usual most basic form
Literary Device
a technique a writer uses to create special effect
Metaphor, metaphorical
word or phrase is applied to an action or object thats not literally applicable.
Metaphorically
uses or relates to a metaphor
Mood
The attitude the audience feels while reading
Narrator
someone who narrates or recounts the events of a novel or poem
Oxymoron
where apparently contradictory words appear in conjunction (found missing, seriously funny, pretty ugly)
Point of View
particular attitude or way of considering a matter
Proverb
stating a general truth or piece of advice
Simile
figure of speech comparing one thing to another using like or as
Stanza
a group of lines in a poem (looks like a small paragraph)
Stylistic Device
the use of a variety of devices that give an idea or feeling
Subordinate Clause
extra information in a sentence that could cannot stand on its own. Like an appositive
Synonymous
having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word (aggression is often related with violence)
Theme
the subject of a talk or the thoughts of a person
Verb
word used to describe an action
Antecedent Action
describes the events or actions that happened before the story. These are needed in order to understand the plot or conflict.
Cliche
a phrase or opinion that is overused and shows lack of originality.
Dissonance
clash or tension caused by the combination of two unsuitable elements.
Indirect Reference
happening in addition to intended result
Jargon
special words or expressions that are used by a particular group or profession and are hard for others to understand
Slang
speech that consists of words or phrases that are informal and are typically restricted to a certain group
Stock Character
requently occurs is stereotypical and is flat or under developed
Tone
expresses the writer’s attitude or feelings towards a subject
Assonance
repetition of the sound of the vowel
Consonance
repetition of the consonant sound or beginning
Epilogue
section of speech at the end of a book or play that adds a comment or conclusion to what has happened
Foil
a character that contrasts with another character in order to highlight particular qualities in that character. (antagonist with the protagonist)
Ironical, irony
something that happens on the surface that differs from what is actually happening.
