Vocabulary Flashcards
Substainabily
Able to maintain at a certain rate or level
Food Chain
The series by which food is grown or reproduced, sold and eventually consumed
Biotic Potential
The maximum capacity of an individual or population to reproduce under optimal environmental conditions
Carrying Capacity
The maximum population of a species that can be supported indefinitely by the ecosystem
Density Dependant Factors
The effects on growth of a population vary with the number of species in it. Overcrowding leads to stress, increasing disease.
Density Independent Factors
Limit the size of population regardless of the density of it. Usually abiotic and include forest fires, hurricanes, etc.
Population
Interbreeding members of one species living Ina specific area isolated from other members in their species.
Closed System
There is no immigration or emigration. The population only changes because of natality and mortality.
Photosynthesis
The process that green plants use to produce sugars using sunlight.
Nitrogen Fixation
The conversion of nitrogen gas in the stomp sphere to ammonia.
Tropic Level
The levels on the food chain pyramid.
Endangered Species
Species close to extinction or expiration in all parts of Canada or large locations.
Introduced Species
An organism that is not native to the area, moved there by human activity.
Vulnerable Species
Any species that is at risk because of low or declining numbers
Ex-Grey Fox
Invasive Species
A plant, fungus, or animal species that is not native to a specific location and causes damage to the environment
