Shape types?
Geometric- regular shapes (square, rectangle, circle)
Organic biometric shape- irregular shapes
Positive shape: solid
Negative shape: opening or void between a positive shape
What is subject matter? How many types are there
5 types of subject matter
Still life; interior scene
Landscape: exterior scene (2)
Portrait: focused on characteristics (2)
Still life:
Any interior scene, or involves the use of domestic objects (anything associated with being indoors)
What are the two landscape types: describe them.
Urban(skyline): An outdoor scene that is described as inside the city limits
Rural(Pastural): An outdoor scene that is outside of the city limits, natural features dominate
What’re the two portrait types? Explain them.
Standard Portrait: shows the characteristics of the “sitter” or someone other than the artist.
Ex. Mona Lisa
Self portrait: “Sitter” and artist are the same (selfie)
Ex. Van Gogh
What is value? How many types are there? Name them.
Grey scale + Black&White 6 Types: White Light Light Middle Grey Dark Middle Grey Dark Black
What is Range? Name the three types
The number of values used in a work of art.
Full range: all 6 are used
Medium range: 3-5 values used
Limited range: 2 values
What is key? What are they?
Dominate value used= overall tonality
High key: white or light
Medium key: LMG or DMG
Low key: Dark or Black
What is contrast? Describe high and low
High contrast: dominate values used are dissimilar (white - Back)
Low contrast: most ; dominate value used are similar to one another (white-light)
What is texture? Describe them.
Surface quality
Actual texture: real surface quality (sculpture)
Implied texture: mimics other material (dimensional work paintings etc.)
What is content? Describe the two types.
Implementation
Catalogue all information by specific label, location, color, and or value
Describe your thoughts, meanings, interpretations based on the information catalogued
What is context
The social, cultural, geographic, political, etc. backstory setting of a work of art
What is cropping?
The extension of the image beyond its borders of the actual structure (used a lot in portraits)
What is basic perspective? What’re the three types?
Explain them:
Element of shape used to created the sense of depth
Overlap: CAN NOT BE MANIPULATED
Vertical placement: Shape size determines depth of an object or person
Relative scale: placement determines nearness of an object (easiest to manipulate)
