Pixel
The smallest unit of information that makes up an image.
Composition
The placement or arrangement of all visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, distinct from the subject of a work.
Aperture
Mechanism within a lens that controls the amount of light that travels into the camera body.
Shutter
A mechanism in the camera body that opens and closes to expose the film or sensor in a camera.
Exposure triangle
ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture
SLR
Single lens reflex
Histogram
A graphical representation of the tonal values of an image
Camera sensor
The digital equivalent of the film or film plane.
Viewfinder
The part of the camera you look through to compose your image
Camera modes
Program (P), Manual (M), Aperture Priority (AV or A), Shutter Priority (S or TV)
JPEG
An image file format (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
Lens Mount
The opening on the front of the camera to which you mount the lens
Shutter speed
The speed at which the shutter opens and closes to expose the sensor/ film. Measured in fractions of a second to full seconds
PPI/ DPI
Points Per Inch/ Dots Per Inch these are a measure and description of the resolution of an image
Memory card
A physical storage medium for images that can be inserted and removed from the camera
