Etiology
Study of disease
Epidemiology
Study of transmission of disease
Endogenous
Comes from within
Exogenous
Comes from an outside source
Reservoir
Where microorganisms live and reproduce
Endemic
Small # of cases in a specific geographic area
Epidemic
Larger # of cases in a specific geographic area
Pandemic
World wide infection
Endospore
Under unfavorable conditions some microbes change into highly resistant forms called spores/ can not reproduce or cause disease
Capsule
A form a bacteria lives in permanently
Aerobic
Requires oxygen to survive
Anaerobic
Can’t have oxygen to survive
Facultative anaerobic
Can live with aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Coccus
Types of coccus
A kind of bacteria
Diplococcus
Streptococcus
Staphylococcus
Bacillus
(__)rod shape used for sterilization
Spirochete
Spiral, round

2- indirect. 6- blood-borne
3- airborne 7- food and water
4- aerosol, spray, spatter. 8- fecal-oral
Definition of naturally acquired immunity
Active immunity: When a person contracted a disease and recovered (created antibodies against pathogen)
Passive immunity: in pregnancy, fetus receives antibodies from placenta
Artificially acquired immunity
Active immunization: the weakened disease-causing organisms are introduced in the body, so that it creates antibodies(vaccines)
Passive immunization: short term immunization done after or to avoid a potential exposure
Sign
Evidence clinician observes
Symptom
The patient tells how he is feeling verbally
Syndrome
Collection of disease
Virulance
How fast is the process the power
