Vocabulary Flashcards
Traits
Characteristics of an organism} appearance, metabolism, behavior, aptitude
Alleles
Traits can be modified producing variations of the same gene
Asexual reproduction
- one parent
- must rely upon mutation for variations
Sexual reproduction
- two parents
- variety through recombination a of genes from different parents
Gene pool
- all genes in a given population
- pool is constantly being mixed but at the same time is maintained
- would remain constant if every member of a population had the same chance of survival or same reproductive potential
Selective pressure
Ant factor that exerts a force in determining which individual will survive and reproduce
Differential reproduction
When some organisms are more successful reproducing more rapidly or in producing offspring
Selective breeding
- domestic animals
- man selects the desired traits and breeds only the elected organism
Natural selection
- nature chooses which traits are desirable
- those that survive to recruitment age produce the next generation
Fittest
Leaves the largest number of offspring
Survival value
- ability to stay alive to ones reproductive age
- better suited to their environment
Sexual selection
Traits that are desirable to the opposite sex
Family size
Nature will favor those traits that result in the production of larger more mature families
Harem
One male multiple females
Mutations
Radom sudden changes in the genetic makeup of an organism
An unreliable source of variation
