Vocabulary Flashcards
Natural hazards
dynamic activities of the planet that make human society vulnerable
Mitigation
reduce the risk of direct consequence of extreme events
Adaptation
adjusting to the average condition
Disaster
hazard with large magnitude, increasing population, improper land use, lack of preparedness, or willful negligence of warming
Prediction
specific time, location, and magnitude
Forecast
range of probability for an event
Deterministic prediction
predict the future state of the environment based on current observation and known first principles
First principles
Newton’s laws, thermodynamics, etc.
Ensemble forecast
ensemble of deterministic predictions with slightly different initial conditions or models
Risk
(frequency or probability of event) x (consequence)
Consequence
cost, loss, damage, etc. per event
Acceptable risk
amount of risk that an individual or society is willing to take
Magnitude-Probabillty relationship
probability decreases with magnitude
Magnitude-Consequence relationship
consequence increases with magnitude
Energy
ability to move, heat, radiate
Sublimation
ice to vapor
Deposition
frosting; vapor to ice
Freezing
water to ice
