Contour
A single line sensitive to the outside surface of an object. Uses only one line to create 3-D image.
Value
The lightness and darkness of
An object. Used to indicate depth (2-D, 3-D)
Tint
Light values (high key)
Shade
Shade=dark values (lowkey)
Portrait
A drawing or painting of a person or animal in a specific pose.
Medium/media
The tools that you use to create an artwork (pencil, paint brush)
Neutrals
White,grey, black
Picture plane
The surface that you draw, paint, or point on.
Subject matter:
The object(s) that we choose to depict or focus on in an artwork
Special subject matter
The artist has chosen to focus their attention on a specific subject matter for a large volume of works I.e Robert Bateman only creates “wildlife art”
Stippling
Created a 3-D object using dots with respect to the light and shadow.
Chiaroscuro
“Bright-dark” a technique pioneered by Leonardo Oa Vinci in which a person or object is put “in the spotlight”
Varying line contour
Variety is adding to the contour line (e.g thick, thin)
Asymmetrical balance
The two sides are NOT identical.
Intensity
The brightness or dullness of a colour.
Hue
The purity of a colour
Gesture drawing
A drawing that captures an ACTION OF MOVEMENT
Proportion
Comparing one part to the other to create balance (I.e nose size uses eye size)
Tenebroso
“Dark-dark”. Also called dramatic illumination l, Is a style of painting using very pronounced chiaroscuro, where there are violent contrasts of light and dark, and where darkness becomes a dominating Feature of the image. A style, or method of painting, adopted by Spanish and Italian painters, especially Caravaggio.
Contrast
Opposites that emphasize (bring out the best in) each other for example dark vs light, big vs small
