What is ceramics?
Having to do with clay or glass or the making of objects from clay or glass.
What is slip?
clay that has been watered down; acts as glue in slip/score technique. Slip is a fine, liquid form of clay applied to the surface of a vessel prior to firing. Slip fill in pores and gives uniform color.
What is score?
To draw or make lines into clay.
What is slip/score technique?
Method used to connect two pieces of clay.
What is wedging?
The process of kneading clay to remove air pockets and get good consistency.
What is the coil method?
Long strands of clay which are laid on top of each other and joined through blending coil to coil.
What is stoneware?
High-fire clay.
What is slab?
This is a flattened out piece of clay.
What is bone dry?
Clay that is completely dried but not yet fired.
What is greenware?
This is a term used to describe unfired clay objects in general.
What is Bisque ware?
Clay object that have been fired for the first time and without any glaze on them.
What is glaze ware?
bisque ware that has been glazed then fired.
What is a fettling knife?
This is a knife used to cut all kinds of clay.
What is a loop tool?
A tool used to carve clay and hollow them out?
What is sprigging on?
This is called applied decoration. The technique of adding decorations to pottery.
What is incising?
A decoration technique, you do it by carving lines into the clay.
What is kiln?
A furnace designed specifically for heating clay to the themperature necessary to make it permananty hard and stone like.
What is an element?
The heating coils of an electric kiln.
What is footing?
The bottom of a piece that rests upon a surface; it can be raised or flush.
What is firing?
clay that is hardened by heating it to a high temperature, fusing the clay particles.
What is glaze?
Glass forming chemicalsn usually with added colorants.
What is slip clay?
Clay in liquid form.
what is a bat?
A plaster disk or slab for work.
What is casting?
A clay form made from a mold.
What is casting slip?
This is liquid clay used in the process o f forming objects with molds.
What is china?
A term associated with vitreous white wares and porcelain.
What is a conditioning coat?
This is a thin coat of color that will soak into the green ware or bisque ware.
What is a cone?
A mixture of ceramic materials that is designed to soften and bend when the proper mixture of time and temperature is reache in the kiln.
What is cone plaque?
This is a small clay cone holder.
What is cone temperature?
This is the mixture of time and temperature at which the cone will bend to show the kiln temperature on the shelf.
What is earthenware?
This is a low-fire clay body which is fired to maturity at approximately 2000°F.
What is food-safe?
A product that has been tested and can be safe for use on surfaces that come in contact with food or drink.
What is a foot?
The base or the part of the piece of ceramic on which it rests.
What is gloss?
A shiny glass-like finish.
What is kiln wash?
The coating put on the top of the kiln shelves to protect them from glaze drips.
What is leather-hard?
Greenware that is allowed to become firm but still retains its wet look.
What is matte?
This is a soft finish with little or no shine.
What is opaque?
Color which does not allow other colors to show through.
What are peep holes?
Small holes in the side of kiln used for viewing shelf cones ventilating the kiln during the firing process.
What are pin holes?
Tiny holes in the final surface finish of a glaze or underglaze.
What is plasticity?
This term refers to the ability of clay to be formed into a shape and retain it.
What are posts?
Articles made of refractory material which support kiln shelves during firing.
What is semi-matte?
A satin-like surface which has a slight sheen it.
What is semi-opaque?
Colors which generally allow only dark colors to show throughs.
What is semi-transparent?
Slightly colored and/or speckled colors which allow most colors to show through with only slight distortions.
What is shelf cone temperature?
This is the amount of heat the ware actually receives.
What is sponge?
Usually refers to a natural sponge used for cleaning and decorating greenware. There are also synthetic sponges available for ceramics.
What is Transparent?
Clear base colors which are free from cloudiness or distortion.
What is under glaze?
a color which is usually applied to greenware and in most cases is covered with a glaze.
What are vent holes?
Small holes made by puncturing the wet greenware with a needle tool when two pieces of ware have been attached.
What are pinch pots?
Starting with a ball of clay the potter opens a hole into the ball and forms a bowl shaped through a combination of stroking and pinching the Clay.
What is terra cotta?
A brownish – orange earthenware clay body commonly used for ceramic sculpture.
What is wheel thrown?
A piece of clay is placed on a potter’s wheel head which spins. The clay is shaped by compression while it it is motion.
