Vocabulary Flashcards
Cladogenesis
Splitting of lineages
Reticulation
Combination of two lineages.
Anagenesis
Change within a lineage
Law of succession
Fossil species that are succeeded by others similar to them. William Clift
Homology
Similarity of features due to common descent.
Homoplasy
Similarity due to independent evolutionary. Common ancestor.
Morphology
Vertebrate limbs/vestigial structures
Embryology
Look similar when first developing.
Molecular sequences
Many genes controlling development occurred a long time ago and were conserved.
Qualitative traits
Can be categorized.
Typically Mendel.
Primarily by a single locus with a few alleles.
Quantitative traits
Continuous traits
Cannot be categorized.
Normal distribution.
Influenced my several loci each with a small effect.
Quantitative (fake)
A Mendelian trait with lots of alleles, incomplete dominance. Can produce a continuous normal graph. One loci.
