Affix
A word element, such as a prefix or suffix, that is attached to a base, stem, or root.
Anachronism
A person, scene, event, or other element in literature that fails to correspond with the time or era in which the work is set.
Annotate
To add notes to (text or diagram) giving explanation or comment.
Antecedent
The noun that a pronoun replaces.
Clause
A group of words containing a subject and its verb that may not be a complete sentence.
Figurative Language
Language that communicates ideas beyond the exact, literal meaning of words.
Omit
To exclude or remove.
Onomatopoeia
A literary device in which the sound of a word is related to its meaning.
Parallelism
Phrases or sentences of a similar construction/meaning placed side by side, balancing each other.
Parallel Structure
Repetition of the same grammatical structure in phrases and clauses.
Paraphrase
(verb) To restate in other words; (noun) A statement that presents a given idea in new language.
Phrase
A group of words that does not have a subject and predicate and cannot stand alone.
Polemic
A powerful argument often made to attack or refute a controversial issue.
Tone
A writer’s attitude toward his or her subject matter revealed through diction, figurative language, and organization on the sentence and global levels.
Wane
To lose size, strength, or power.
