foreshadowing
is the introduction early in a story of verbal and dramatic hints that suggest what is to come later.
tone
the author’s implicit attitude to the characters, places, and events in a work.
mood
the feeling created for the reader by a work of literature
theme
a statement that offers an insight into life and human nature ( revelation); the central idea of a story.
motif
motif: a recurring pattern of images or words that reveals a theme.
symbol
a person, object, image, word, or event that has an additional, usually abstract, meaning beyond its literal meaning.
figurative language
figures of speech that exaggerates, or means something other than what it first appears to mean.
allusion
a reference to a mythological, literary, or historical person, place, or thing
oxymoron
a paradox made up of two seemingly contradictory words.
metaphor
an implied comparison of two unlike things without using words “as” or “like.”
simile
a comparison of two unlike things using the words “like”, “as”, or “as though.”
personification
a literary device in which the author speaks of or describes an animal, object, or idea as if it were a person.
dramatic irony
a discrepancy between what a character says or thinks and what the reader knows to be true
situational irony
a discrepancy between appearance and reality, between the actual situation and what would seem to be appropriate, between expectation and fulfilment
verbal irony
what is said is the opposite of what is meant
