A laborer who works the land for a farmer who owns it in exchange for a portion of the value of the crop.
Sharecropper
A test to see if a person can read and write. This was used to qualify a person for voting.

Impeach
Northerners that moved South during Reconstruction. They were described negatively by many southerners who said they were there for political gain or to take advantage of the economic situation (i.e. there for profit). Freedmen saw them in a positive way. They saw them as their to protect them and their rights.
