Vocabulary Flashcards
Blood-Brain Barrier
the barrier between circulating blood and the extracellular fluid of the brain
Psychoactive Effect
drugs must cross the blood-brain barrier
Agonist
a chemical that binds to a receptor and activates it’s function
Re-Uptake
the re-absorption of some neurotransmitters by special receptors in the pre-synaptic membrane
Psychoactive Drugs
chemicals that cross the blood-brain barrier and alter brain chemistry and functioning; these drugs lead to changes in perception, cognition, volition mood or behavior
Antagonist
a chemical that binds to a receptor but has no action on it; Instead, it prevents other substrates from binding, effectively turning off the receptor’s function
S.S.R.I.
selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor; any drug that inhibits re-uptake of serotonin , with little to no effect on other neurotransmitters
S.S.R.I. Drugs
Fluoxetine (Prozac), Citalopram (Celexa), Escitalopram (Lexapro), Fluvoxamine (Luvox), Paroxetine (Paxil), Sertraline (Zoloft)
