Administrative Law
Law related to the relationship between people and the government departments, boards and agencies.
Bylaws
Small local regulations that affect the local community
Constitutional Law
Constitutional law limits the powers of government by setting out basic laws and standards but adhere to. It overrides all other type of law.
Civil/Private Law
Deals with legal relationships between individuals and between individuals and organizations (excluding government). Includes wills, property laws and employment laws. Connects with Tort law.
Contract Law
Contract Law deals with everyday transactions. It provides rules regarding agreements between people and business. If one party does not hold up their part of the deal then Contract law steps in.
Criminal Law
Criminal Law prohibits and punishes behaviour that cause harm to others. The most Popular/televised type of law. All crimes are described in the Criminal Code of Canada.
Distinguishing a case
Identifying a case as being sufficiently different from a previous case s to warrant a different decision.
Domestic Law
Law that governs activity within a nations borders.
International Law
Technically doesn’t exist, Governs relations between independent countries (alliances and treaties)
Jurisdiction
The political or legal authority the to pass and enforce laws.
Procedural Law
Law that prescribes the methods of enforcing the rights and obligations of substantive law. It refers to the gathering of evidence, proper trial procedures and making lawful arrests. Makes sure every thing is true and fair before/during a court case.
Property Law
Governs ownership rights in property.
Public Law
law related to the relationships between individuals and their state/Province. All Public Laws are subject to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Statue Law
A law or act passed by the government. Statues generally override common law.
Substantive Law
It is a category of Domestic Law. It defines rights, duties and obligations of citizens and levels of government. The general law that applies to everyday life.
