Vocabulary Flashcards
Circuit
A complete path through which electric current can flow.
Resistance
The opposition to the flow of electric current in a material, measured in ohms (Ω).
Parallel Circuit
A circuit where the current has multiple paths to flow through.
Series Circuit
A circuit where the current flows through each component one after the other, only having one path.
Current
The flow of electric charge through a conductor, measured in amperes (A).
Power
The rate at which electrical energy is transferred, measured in watts (W).
Series circuit:
Voltage
The electric potential difference between two points, measured in volts (V).
Electrons
Negatively charged particle surrounding the nucleus of an atom
Protons
Positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom
Neutrons
Neutral charged atom found in the nucleus of an atom
Induction
the process of electrically charging an object without directly touching it to another charged object, instead, by bringing a charged object close enough to influence the distribution of charges within the neutral object, causing it to develop a charge of its own
Conductor
A material that allows electric current to flow easily through it, like copper wire.
Friction
By rubbing two objects of certain materials, we cause electrons to flow from one object to another, thus creating deficit of electrons in one object, and excess of electrons in another
Coulombs Law
a law stating that like charges repel and opposite charges attract, with a force proportional to the product of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
Electric Field
A region around a charged object where a force would be exerted on another charged object.
Potential Difference
The difference in voltage between two points in a circuit.
Electromotive Force
The voltage produced by a source of electricity, like a battery.
Ohms law
A relationship between voltage, current, and resistance, stated as V = IR.
Grounding
Connecting a conductor to the Earth to provide a path for excess charge to escape.
Insulator
A material that does not allow electric current to flow easily through it, like rubber.
Conduction
the process of transferring electric charge between two objects by bringing them into direct physical contact, where electrons flow from the charged object to the neutral object until they both acquire the same charge, essentially sharing the charge distribution between them
