What is an alliance?
A formal pact or agreement between or among nations
Alliances can serve various purposes, including military cooperation and economic agreements.
Who were the Bolsheviks?
A member of the majority faction of the party that seized power in 1917 and formed the Communist party in the Soviet Union
The Bolsheviks were led by figures such as Vladimir Lenin.
Define casualty in a military context.
A member of the armed forces removed from active duty as a result of being killed, wounded, captured, or missing in action
Casualties can be classified as killed in action, wounded in action, or missing in action.
What is communism?
The theory of a classless social system in which all property and means of production are owned in common; socialist theory deriving from the works of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels
Communism aims to eliminate private ownership and establish a society where goods are distributed according to need.
What does conscription mean?
Compulsory enrollment in military service
Conscription is often implemented during times of war or national emergency.
Define consumerism.
The idea that the acquisition (buying/selling) of goods is beneficial to society or its economy
Consumerism can lead to increased production and economic growth but may also result in overconsumption.
What is diplomacy?
The practice or skill of conducting negotiations between nations or governments
Diplomacy involves dialogue, negotiation, and the management of international relations.
What does disillusion mean?
Disappointment that something was not as one initially perceived it to be
Disillusion often occurs when expectations are not met.
What is meant by ethnic?
Of or related to a large group of people who share a distinctive culture, language, or religion, or who are of the same race or national heritage
Ethnic identities can significantly influence social dynamics and politics.
Define genocide.
The intentional attempt to exterminate all members of a certain race, nationality, religious, or ethnic group
Genocide is considered a crime against humanity and is condemned by international law.
What is interdependence?
Relying on one another; mutually dependent
Interdependence is often seen in economic relationships between countries.
What does millet refer to?
A non-Muslim religious community, particularly those in the Ottoman Empire
Each millet operated under its own religious laws but faced restrictions and additional taxes.
Define mobilization.
The act of assembling and preparing (troops or the like) for active military duty or service to a country
Mobilization can also refer to the organization of industries and resources during wartime.
What is persecution?
A purposeful course of harassing, punishing, or exterminating others, especially because of their race or religious, moral, or political beliefs
Persecution often leads to significant human rights violations.
What is propaganda?
Information or opinions that are made public to promote or attack a movement, cause, or person
Propaganda can take many forms, including media, literature, and public speeches.
Define total war.
A global war in which all warring nations mobilize for the war effort including soldier and civilian populations
Total war meets four criteria: mobilization, blurring of lines between soldier and civilian, total control of society, and rejection of a compromise peace.
What is a tsar?
The title of male Russian rulers before 1917
The tsar held absolute power and was often seen as the embodiment of the state.

What is an Alliance System?
A mutual agreement, outlined in a document, between at least two (or more) countries
What is Industrialization?
The development of industries in a country or region on a wide scale.
What is Nationalism?
Identification with one’s own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations.
