In Italian, “gli” is used as:
1. The definite article (the):
• It is the masculine plural form of “lo” and “l’” (used before masculine nouns starting with certain consonants or vowels).
• Examples:
• “gli studenti” (the students)
• “gli amici” (the friends)
• “gli uomini” (the men)
2. An indirect object pronoun (to him, to them):
• It replaces “a lui” (to him), “a loro” (to them), and is placed before the verb.
• Examples:
• “Gli ho detto la verità” (I told him/them the truth).
• “Gli ho portato un regalo” (I brought him/them a gift).
Remember to choose “gli” based on the context, whether it is acting as an article or a pronoun.
