Epic
Epic gives the protagonist or main character a journey that goes through a variety of experiences which reveals who they are over time
Invocation of the muse
like a prayer to a (deity or muse) that is a request for helping hand from them at the beginning of the poem
In media’s res
In middle of things (usually when the hero is at their lowest point) using flashbacks,dialog and other techniques to tell the whole story
Deus ex machina
supernatural forces insert themselves into action (divine intervention) they solve the problem when it seemed unsolvable by sudden appearance of an unexpected person,object, or event
Epic simile
(extended metaphor /epithets )
often very complex poetic that unfolds over time in several lines that are unlike (doesn’t aline)
Extended metaphor
A version of metaphor that extends (spans) over the course of multiple lines,paragraphs, or poetry
Epithet
A literary device that describes a person, place or object by replacing it with a descriptive word or phrase (a small description of before the introduction of a character)
Tragic hero
A character that has a tragedy and is usually the main protagonist (character) this affects them in the future and the plot of the story
Hubris
Someone who is overconfident or has excessive pride (cockiness)
Dramatic irony
When the reader knows something that the characters don’t know; Helps add suspense and foreshadowing
Catharsis
the use of strong feelings in literature to engage the reader in a type of emotional and inspire pity and fear in the audience
Moirai
Often known in English as the Fate that the character will face with their destiny which is in controlled and no man should be judged happy until after his death
Didactic
Designed to impart information, advice, or some doctrine of morality or philosophy (teach or instruct something with the story)
Terza rima
A verse form composed of iambic tercets (three-line groupings) a small description of before the introduction of a character
Tercet
A poetic unit of three lines, rhymed or unrhymed
Contrapasso
Meaning suffer the opposite (Latin) / punishments of the souls
Allegory
A narrative or visual representation in which a character, place, or event can be interpreted to represent a meaning with moral or political significance (Has a double meaning, It can be understood as a literal meaning but can also have a symbolic meaning)
