Theism
Belief in a one all powerful God who created and sustains the universe but is not physically a part of the universe
Pantheism
Belief that God is the universe, God is everything - an impersonal force that exists in every part of this universe: rocks, trees, you and me..
Atheism
Belief that no type of God exists
Agnosticism
Uncertainty of whether or not God exists
Or
Belief that truth of God’s existence cannot be know.
Empirical Evidence
Obtained through practical experience rather than studies/theories or pure logic
Information acquired by observation or experimentation
Forensic Evidence
Evidence obtained by scientific methods ie DNA tests, blood tests, ballistics etc
Philosophical Evidence
Claims that require evidence
Relating to the study of fundamental nature of knowledge, reality & existence
Skeptic
Someone who doubts certain propositions or beliefs, typically religious beliefs
Assertion
A statement you strongly believe is true
Confident or forceful statement of fact or belief
Absolute -
Something that is true for everyone, everywhere at all times
Ie 2+2=4
Self defeating statement
A statement that fails to meet its own standard and therefore cannot be true
Pluralism
The philosophical idea that all religions are equally acceptable and true and that all religions lead to god in the end
Tolerance (both original and modern definitions)
Original: treating those with different ideas respectfully
Modern: accepting all ideas as equally true
Truth (3 definitions)
- Telling it like it is
- That which corresponds to its object
- That which describes an actual state of affairs
Privation
The loss or absence of a quality that is usually present
Ie cold is the privation of heat
