Vocabulary Flashcards
(Brønsted-Lowry) Acid
Hydrogen-containing substance that donates a proton (H+) to other substance. (Proton-donor)
Brønsted-Lowry Base
Substance that accepts a proton (H+ ion) from other substance. (Proton-Acceptor)
Conjugate Acid-Base Pair
Two substances that differ only by loss or gain of a proton (H+)
Amphipriotic Substance
Substance that can either donate or accept a proton. (Function as either acid or base)
Conjugate Acid
Accepts 1 H atom; One Fewer Negative Charge
Conjugate Base
One Fewer H atom; One More Negative Charge
Strong Acid/Strong Base
An acid/base that ionizes/dissasociates its ions completely in a solution.
Weak Acid/Base
An acid or base that partially disassociates/ionizes in a solution
What makes an Acid Solution?
Concentration of H3O+ > Concentration of OH-
What makes a Basic Solution?
Concentration of H3O+ < Concentration of OH-
What makes a Neutral Solution?
Concentration of H3O+ = Concentration of OH-
Salt
Ionic Compound containing a metal or polyatomic ion as the positive ion and nonmetal or polyatomic ion (except OH-) as the negative ion.
Arrhenius Acid
Hydrogen-containing compound that produces hydrogen ions in water.
Arrhenius Base
Hydrogen-containing compound that produces hydroxide in water.
Hydrolysis
Chemical Reaction of Salt with Water to Produce Hydronium Ion or Hydroxide Ion (or Both).
