vocabulary 1 Flashcards
segment bisector
a point, segment, line, or plane that divides a line segment into two equal parts
supplementary
two angles are supplementary when they add up to 180 degrees
complementary
when two angles add up to 90 degrees
angle (obtuse, right, straight, and acute)
obtuse- more than 90 degrees, less than 180 degrees
right- 90 degrees
straight- 180 degrees
acute- less than 90 degrees
vertex
corners/ intersections of geometric shapes
sides
a surface forming the outside of a thing, or one of the lines bounding a geometric figure
degree
a unit of measurement of angles, 1/360 in a circle
angle bisector
a line/Ray that divides an angle into 2 congruent angles (interior and exterior)
linear pair
a linear pair is a pair of adjacent, supplementary angles. adjacent meaning next to each other and supplementary meaning they add up to 180 degrees
opposite Rays
a “Ray” in geometry is half of a line. a ray has one endpoint and extends indefinitely in one direction
adjacent angles
two angles that have a common vertex and a common side
point
a precise location or place on a plane. usually represented by a dot. (an element of some set called a space)
line
a straight path that is endless in both directions
plane
a flat, 2 dimensional surface with no thickness that is infinite in all directions
line segment
part of a line that is bounded by two distinct endpoints.
collinear
points that lie on the same straight line
endpoint
a point/value that marks the end of a ray or one of the ends to a line segment
Ray
a line with a single endpoint that extends infinitely in one direction
Coplanar
3 or more points which all lie in the same plane
parallel
side by side and having the same distance between them
postulate
a true statement which doesn’t require to be proved
midpoint
the point on a line that divides the segment into two congruent segments
