Vocabular Words section 1 Chapter 10 Flashcards
Genes
Functional units that controls inherited trait. Passed on from generation to generation
Meiosis
- Cutting in half the number of Chromosomes
- Production of gametes (sex cells)
- Cell division
- two Haploids (n )form a diploid (2n)
Reduction division process, only occur in reproductive cells. Cells are not genetically identical. One diploid cell produces four haploid cells
Fertilization
The process of gametes, which are haploids, combine to make a diploid. One haploid coming from a male and one coming from a female
Homologous Chromosomes
One of two paired chromosomes from each parent. Carries genes for a specific trait at the same location.
Haploids
Cell with half the number of chromosomes (n) as a diploid (2n) cell
Diploid
Having two copies of each chromosome (2n)
Crossing Over
Exchange of chromosomal segments between a pair of homologous chromosomes during prophase 1 of meiosis.
Gametes
A haploid sex cell, formed during meiosis. Produces a diploid fertilized egg. Combines with a haploid sex cell.
