Vocabs Flashcards
Light
a range on the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to human eyes.
made of photons.
contain traits of waves and particles.
electromagnetic spectrum
visible light is a small portion of broad family of electromagnetic waves
infrared
electromagnetic waves (light) that is before visible light in the electromagnetic spectrum
ultraviolet
electromagnetic waves (light) that is after visible light in the electromagnetic spectrum
color
different frequencies of light that eyes detect and send them to the brain as colors.
color receptors
known as cones S, M, L each sensitive to a different range of color frequencies
pigment
a material which selectively absorbs certain wavelengths of light and then reflects other wavelengths.
transparency
materials that allow light to pass through; i.e. water and glass
opaque
materials that does not let light through
shadow
light is stopped by an object before hitting something else, creates shadow in the area it doesn’t reach
umbra
complete shadow, no light is going through
penumbra
partial shadow, some light is going through
polarized
vibration back and forth in only one direction
3d vision
lens in eyes changes to focus on far or near objects allowing for depth perception.
stereoscopic vision: having 2 eyes give 2 povs allowing for better depth perception
reflection
when reach the boundary of a material, it can be reflected
incident wave
the wave before it reaches the boundary
reflected wave
wave after bounced off boundary
Law of Reflection
angle of reflection is equal to angle of incidence
refraction
when wave crosses a boundary b/w mediums and bends in a new direction
diffuse reflection
when light is reflected off a very jagged surface producing a blurred image
specular reflection
light is reflected off a smooth surface creating clear images
real images
when light converges in space to create an image, can be projected
virtual images
when light does not converge in space, can only be seen by looking through the len or mirror that created the image
plane mirrors
flat mirror,
always create virtual images.
create images that are same size + distance the object is from the mirror
