Vocab2 Flashcards
Star
Big spheres of very hot gas that give off light and other radiation
Light year
The stars distance from earth
Red giant
The star is red because it’s surface is collier but the core is hot enough to invert helium into carbon and oxygen
White dwarf
A small and very dense star about the size of earth
Supernova
A huge bright explosion in space
Black hole
Leftover core that has a mass greater than three solar masses that collapsed
Nebula
A large cloud of dust or gas in space
Neutron star
If the core that remains after a supernova has a mass of 1.4 to 3 solar masses the remnant can become a neutron star
Galaxy
Is a collection of million or billions of stars
Clusters
A group of stars bound together by gravity
Interstellar matter
Gas and dust in between stars
Quasar
Object named for its star like appearance
Universe
Every thing that physically that exists
Red shift
The universe is shifting and the light is going towards the red end
Blue shift
When an object is approaching us the shift is towed shorter wavelength at the spectrum bleu end
