overjoyed, thrilled, delighted
The cross country team was ecstatic when all of their runners made it to state.
Observant (adj)
alert, conscientious, careful
Observant students will notice that the bells are designed to eliminate tardiness – and detentions.
Loquacious (adj)
talkative
The loquacious young man worked well in groups; he could easily speak to even the shyest group-members.
Parsimonious (adj)
stingy, sparing in use of resources
I am always parsimonious with my money; I’m trying to save for college.
Brevity (n)
briefness, clarity
Shakespeare said that, “Brevity is the soul of wit.” Do you agree?
Brandish (v)
to wave as a threat or display
The cheerleaders brandished their pom poms and signs as the team came on the field.
Quaint (adj)
pleasingly odd or old-fashioned
When a real-estate agent says a house is quaint, be careful. It may be his nice way of saying it’s old and strange.
Attune (v)
to tune or bring into harmony
Mothers become attuned to the sounds of their babies’ cries.
Vapid (adj)
dull, tasteless, boring
I could tell the girl wasn’t interested in what I was saying when she gave me a vapid smile.
Assuage (adj)
to lessen pain, to calm, to satisfy
The student assuaged his nervousness before giving a speech by breathing deeply and thinking of the ocean.
Reticent (adj)
not inclined to speak, taciturn
Reticent is the opposite of loquacious! The reticent student never contributed to class discussions.
Facetiously (adj)
frivolously, playfully, humorously
The teacher facetiously told a student to cut his hair and get a job.
Doff (v)
to remove or take off, especially clothing
You should doff your hat before entering Mrs. Duneman’s office…. Or any public building, for that matter.
Don (v)
to put on clothes
Before the game, the football team dons their pads, uniforms and cleats.
Mien (n)
one’s appearance, bearing or manner
The student has a professional, studious mien.
Monochrome (adj)
Consisting of one color in various shades
Since dogs can’t see color, their world is monochrome, made up of shades of gray.
Juxtapose (v)
to place close together or side by side to create a point
John Steinbeck juxtaposes chapters about a dust-bowl family with chapters about a turtle in his famous book, The Grapes of Wrath.
Copious (adj)
Plentiful, abundant
