Vocab words Flashcards
Highly specific proteins that attach themselves to foreign substances in an initial step in destroying such substances as part of the bodies defense
Antibodies
A foreign substance that stimulates white blood cells to create antibodies when it enters the body
Antigen
The condition in which pathogens are absent or controlled
Asepsis
A primitive, thick walled, reproductive body capable of developing into a new individual
Bacterial spore
Biological agents that can cause speed disease to living things
Biohazardous material
Leak proof puncture resistant containers that are colored, can you read or labeled with a special Biohazardous symbol
Biohazardous waste container
A reservoir host who is inward of the presence of a pathogen and so spreads the disease while exhibiting no symptoms of infection
Carrier
The destruction of infectious agent on an object or surface by direct application of chemical or physical
Means
Disinfection
An infection in which an abnormality or malfunction in routine body process cause normally beneficial or harmless microganisms to become pathogenic
Endogenous infection
An inanimate object such as clothing body fluids water or food that may be contaminated with infectious organisms and thus serve to transmit disease
Fomite
The condition of being resistant, or not suspectible to pathogens, and the disease they cause
Immunity
Monocytes white in the bloodstream are phagocytes found in the lymph nodes liver spieen lungs bone marrow and connective tissue
Macrophages
A simple form of life commonly made up of a single cell and so small that it can be seen only with a microscope
Microorganisms
Beneficial bacteria found in the body that creates a barrier against pathogens by producing substances that may harm invaders in using up the resources pathogens need to live
Normal flora
Infection by micro organisms that can cause disease only with a host resistance is low
Opportunistic infection
A microorganism capable of causing disease
Pathogen
A speacialized white blood cell that engulfs and digests pathogens
Phagocytes
Animal, insect, or human, whose body is suspectible to growth of a pathogen
Reservoir host
Reduction of the number of microorganisms of an object, or a surface to a fairly safe levels
Sanitization
A combination of universal precautions and body substances, isolation guidelines used in hospitals
Standard precautions
The destruction of all microorganisms including bacterial spores by specific means
Sterilization
An infection in which the host experiences only some of the symptoms of the infection, or milder symptoms in full case
Sub clinical case
An individual who had a little or no immunity to infection by particular organism
Susceptible host
Specific precautions required by the department of health and human services centers for disease, control and prevention to prevent health care workers from exposing themselves and others infection by blood-borne pathogens
Universal precautions
