What is a Modem?

A

Converts the signal used for transmission to a signal that can be used by your computer and vice versa.

  • in general, cache is a hardware or software component that stores data so future requests for that data can be served FASTEr
  • In case of browsing: cache is the memory used to store recenrly downloaded data to avoid downloading again, faster service and less data usage.

Browsing :

  • browsing history: addresses daved easily so you can select a page recently viewed
  • Different than cache: stores addressed not COntent
  • You can also clear your internet hisotry thorugh the borwser options

DNS:

A

Domain names are easier to REMEMBER than IP addresses

  • but the internet is based on IP addresses
  • Each time you type a domain name in a URL - your computer has to first find that IP address od that domain name
  • it asks special computers on the internet that are called domain name servers

  • Data is usually not sent as a continouts stream, split into smaller chunks
  • smaller chunks are then places in digital envelopes called packets

Security vs Privacy

A

Privacy and security are related but are not the same thing.

  • privacy related to any Rights you have to CONTROl your personal information and how its used
  • think about - privacy policies

PRIVACY = YOUR RIGHTS

Security refers to how your personal information is PROTECTED

  • your data different details about you may live in a lot of places
  • that can challenge both your privacy and security
