Syllogism
deductive reasoning as distinct from induction
Synecdoche
a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa
Satire
the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues
Soliloquy
an act of speaking one’s thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, especially by a character in a play
Sonnet
a poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line
Shakespearean Sonnet
made of three quatrains (four-line stanzas) and one couplet (a two-line stanza)
Italian Sonnet
a 14-line poem with a specific structure and rhyme scheme
Slapstick
comedy based on deliberately clumsy actions and humorously embarrassing events
Southern Gothic
a literary genre that emerged from the Romantic and Gothic traditions, focusing on the darker aspects of Southern life and culture

a narrative mode or method that attempts “to depict the multitudinous thoughts and feelings which pass through the mind” of a narrator
Surrealism
an art and literary movement that focuses on exploring the unconscious mind and dreamlike imagery
